Workplace EV charging grants in 2026: what businesses should check
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) continues to support UK businesses transitioning to electric fleets. As of early 2026, the voucher-based system provides a contribution towards the purchase and installation costs of electric vehicle charge points.
What changed in April 2026?
For installations completed from 1 April 2026, the Workplace Charging Scheme offers up to £500 per socket, replacing £350. Funding covers up to 75% of eligible purchase and installation costs including VAT, capped at 40 sockets across all applicant sites. An OZEV-authorised installer and eligible commercial chargepoints are required; installation and voucher claim must be completed within 180 days of issue.
Check the site before applying
Funding is currently confirmed until 31 March 2027, subject to government changes. Eligible applicants include businesses, charities and public-sector organisations; state-funded education has a separate scheme. Suitable dedicated off-road parking and landlord or landowner permission are required. Ordinary businesses need staff or fleet use, with limited out-of-hours resident use permitted. Check current eligibility before relying on funding.
Plan around your vehicles and supply
Match charging to vehicle dwell times and energy needs. Assess site demand, available supply, managed charging and network requirements. Resolve landlord permissions and cable routes. Request separate equipment, electrical works, groundworks, software and support costs.
Where solar fits
Compare daytime charging with solar generation and other building loads. Do not assume every session uses solar power. Batteries are a separate design and cost choice, not a prerequisite.
Next steps
Before submitting a voucher application, ensure that you have identified a certified installer and conducted a preliminary site audit. Reviewing your long-term energy strategy alongside EV requirements will help future-proof your installation against growing charging needs.
